The Woodstock Slammers are two games closer to possibly claiming their third Kent Cup.
The Slammers shut out the Yarmouth Mariners 1-0 on Monday, April 9th at Mariners Centre in Yarmouth in Maritime Junior Hockey League playoff action.
The first period of Monday night's contest remained scoreless. Period two was almost another period free of scoring, until Nick Huard scored 18:40 into the second frame. Andrew Langan and Robert Visca pitched in with the assists.
The third period, like the first, was scoreless, allowing the Slammers to coast to an easy shutout victory over the Mariners.
The Slammers failed to take advantage of three power play opportunities they were presented with Monday night, and the Mariners failed to utilize on the same amount of man advantages.
Matt Murphy saw 31 shots, stopping all of them. Charles Grant also faced 31 shots, but he refused 30 of them.
Slammers' head coach Jason Tatarnic was satisfied with the team's improved performance. The Slammers came back after being doubled 4-2 last Thursday night.
"I thought we played very well, especially in the first period where we dictated the pace," Tatarnic stated in a press release on the team's website. "We played a more physical game tonight and limited our mistakes."
Tatarnic added that Yarmouth would be ready for them Tuesday night.
"We know Yarmouth will be ready to play tomorrow."
In Tuesday night's contest, the Slammers edged the Mariners 2-1 in their second consecutive road game in Yarmouth.
Robert Visca led the Woodstock side with one goal and one assist.
Following a scoreless period one, Visca scored an unassisted goal to get things going at 8:19 in the middle frame. Andrew Wigg got the Mariners on the board at 13:26 and tied the game at one. Nick Huard scored roughly five minutes later, breaking the tie and bringing the score to 2-1 in favour of the Woodstock side.
The third period was scoreless, allowing the Slammers to leave with yet another easy one-goal victory.
The Slammers only had one power play opportunity, but failed to utilize on it. Yarmouth didn't take advantage of the power plays they were presented with either, despite being on the man advantage five different times.
Matt Murphy stopped 31 of 32 shots faced, while Charles Grant blocked 21 of 23 shots in the loss.
Game number five is scheduled to occur on Friday, April 13th at 7:30 pm at the Carleton Civic Centre in Woodstock. If the Slammers are victorious in game five, they will take home their third Kent Cup.
