The Woodstock Slammers were edged by the Penticton Vees in their third game of the 2012 RBC Cup tournament.
As a result of the loss, the Slammers currently stand at a 1-2-0 record in the tournament.
The Vees were likely the Slammers' biggest challenge in RBC Cup play. Penticton remained undefeated for over 40 consecutive games in the 2011-12 regular season. Their squad also consists of three NHL draft picks and 15 NCAA prospects.
After a scoreless first period, Andrew Langan opened the scoring at 15:21 in period two. Chris Rygus and Nick Huard chipped in with assists.
Ryan Reilly tied the game at one goal apiece at 16:41. Troy Stecher passed to Reilly, and Reilly managed to slide the rubber past Matt Murphy. The score remained a 1-1 tie for the rest of the second period.
Joey Benik broke the tie on a power play at 2:41 in the third frame, rounding out the scoring in the contest.
Matt Murphy was pulled with eleven seconds remaining of the match, but it was an insufficient amount of time for Penticton to manage an extra goal.
The Slammers failed to utilize on six man advantage situations, while the Vees went 1 for 6 on the power play.
Michael Garteig refused 20 of 21 shots faced for the victory, while Matt Murphy stopped 39 of 41 shots faced in the losing effort.
Murphy was named Player of the Game for the Slammers. Joey Benik received the Player of the Game title for the Penticton side. Benik had one goal and four penalty minutes in Tuesday's game.
The Slammers will face the Soo Thunderbirds on Thursday, May 10th at 3 pm Mountain time. All RBC Cup contests are being broadcast on FASTHockey.com.
