Rick Hansen Relay Visits Carleton County

On Sunday, October 9th, I walked down from my grandfather's house in Upper Woodstock to cover the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Man in Motion World Tour visit to Woodstock. The relay arrived in the Shiretown on Saturday, October 8th, starting from Lower Main Street and continuing to the corner of Main and Kirkpatrick Streets. The relay resumed where it left off at 9:00 this morning.

The Shiretown Blogger would love to have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Hansen, but it is understandable that he is not able to make personal appearances in every community. He was with us in spirit though, as I witnessed at least three different medal bearers from the town hall to Upper Woodstock. These medal bearers were dressed in bright yellow and carried a silver medal for a 250-metre section of the run. Each medal bearer had a unique way of going about their task. Nicole Smith of Woodstock, founder of Smith's Dance Academy, danced with some students for her section of the relay.

On August 24, 1986, Rick Hansen began his original Man in Motion World Tour in Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Over a period of 26 months, he travelled 40,000 kilometres over 34 countries, raising over $250 million for spinal cord injury research, and to make the world a more inclusive and accessible place. On August 24, 2011, a quarter-century to the day of beginning the original tour, Rick Hansen kicked off the silver anniversary edition of the Man in Motion World Tour in Cape Spear, Newfoundland, and it will be brought to a close when he reaches Vancouver, British Columbia.
