Crews levelling the lot at the corner of Main and Queen Streets on Friday, August 5th. |
I noticed that construction crews were levelling the vacant lot at the corner of Main and Queen Streets on Friday following my visit to the Dooryard Arts Festival headquarters. The lot used to house the MacLauchlan Building, which housed longtime downtown businesses Marci Fashions and Fabulous Finds on the bottom floor, and apartments on the top floor. The building burnt on October 29, 2008. The structure required a significant amount of work prior to the blaze, but was badly damaged due to the fire and firefighters' efforts to access the blaze. (Excavators had to be called in to dig holes in the roof and walls to reach the fire). The historic building was demolished in January 2009.

Following the demolition of the MacLauchlan Building, the common wall shared with the Laurie's Shoes building was exposed, creating an eyesore.

The town then expropriated the three vacant properties that are actually at this site, and the common wall was fixed in the spring of 2011.
