Falling poppies--A solution to a common problem

It is almost time for Remembrance Day, and the local Royal Canadian Legion branch has once again kicked their annual poppy campaign into high gear.

It is important that you wear a poppy on the left side of your jacket in front of your heart at this time of year to honour the veterans that fought and died for your right to decide whether or not you want to wear one. But one problem (and pet peeve) with wearing poppies is that it can be difficult to keep them on your coat until Remembrance Day.

Some people I know have tried a new solution to make better use out of the small, pink erasers found on the end of pencils. Those erasers are useless anyway--they make a mess of your paper and wear out quickly. Or are they useless??

Break the eraser out of its small metal casing attached to the pencil. You can carefully cut the eraser in half using scissors or leave it completely intact if you wish. Poke the sharp end of the poppy needle into the eraser until it comes completely out and the sharp end of the needle is slightly away from the eraser. (Do this after pinning it on your jacket!)

Wear your poppy with the eraser on it until Remembrance Day. It may be difficult to stick your poppy in the soil at the base of the cenotaph in Woodstock after the remembrance ceremony if you leave the eraser on it.
