Slammers fall in first RBC match

The Woodstock Slammers have gotten off to a rough start in the 2012 RBC Cup tournament.

In their opening game of their first visit to the RBC Cup, the Slammers fell to the host squad, the Humboldt Broncos, in a 4-1 defeat.

Emrik Guillemette opened the scoring at 5:51 into the contest. The score would remain at 1-0 for the remainder of the opening frame.

The Slammers took a penalty at 4:17, as captain Andrew Langan was called for high sticking, providing the Broncos with their first power play opportunity. However, they failed to utilize on the man advantage.

The Slammers also ended up on a man advantage at 16:37, when Adam Antkowiak received a high sticking penalty, but the power play ended without the Slammers getting on the board.

Woodstock was assessed a bench minor for too many men on the ice at 17:59, but Humboldt did not respond, despite being up a man.

Josh Roach made the score 2-0 for the Broncos at 3:54.

Zach Shannon went to the penalty box as a result of a slash at 16:17. Emrik Guillemette joined him, being assessed the same penalty. The coincidental resulted in a 4-on-4, where Andrew Johnston slipped a shot past Matt Murphy nearly a minute into the 4-on-4, increasing the host side's lead to 3-0 after the middle frame.

Robbie Ciolfi increased the score to 4-0 for the Broncos at 4:27 in the third period.

Andrew Schriver got the Slammers on the board nearly four minutes later, slipping a pass from Bradley Greene and Connor Tresham past Humboldt goaltender Matt Hrynkiw. But Schriver's goal was too little too late for the Slammers, resulting in a final score of 4-1.

Hrynkiw refused 34 of 35 shots for the win, while Murphy blocked only 30 of 37 shots faced in the losing effort.

Schriver, who scored the lone goal for the Slammers, was named Player of the Game for Woodstock, while Andrew Johnston, who scored one goal and assisted another, received Player of the Game for the host side.

The Slammers faced off again on Monday, May 7th at 7:30 pm Mountain time. The results will be posted in an upcoming post on The Shiretown Blogger.
