Stormdale Covered Bridge destroyed by weekend arson

Stormdale Covered Bridge in 2010.

A beautiful covered bridge was torched during a recent series of suspicious fires in Carleton County. The Stormdale (Mangum) Covered Bridge, located in Ashland, approximately 13 kilometers from Hartland, was destroyed by arson early Saturday morning.

A truck was stolen from downtown Hartland and set ablaze inside the bridge. RCMP believe this case of arson may be related to a series of other fires in the area. The Stormdale Covered Bridge fire is currently under investigation.
The bridge was built around 1909 and isn't likely to be replaced in the foreseeable future. It is a significant loss and leaves residents of the community with only one accessible road.
